Sligo Sexual Abuser
In October 1999, Michael Cunnane, a former teacher from Sligo, was sentenced to three years in prison, but the sentence was suspended. This decision came after he pleaded guilty to a total of 11 counts of indecent assault involving three young boys. The assaults took place over a period spanning from 1974 to 1981, during which Cunnane exploited his position of trust to commit these heinous acts.

Two years later, in May 2001, Cunnane found himself back in court, facing additional charges. On this occasion, he admitted to further counts of indecent assault, this time involving five more boys. Once again, he received a suspended sentence of three years, highlighting the repeated nature of his offending.

The abuse was carried out under the guise of providing horseriding lessons, a pretext that Cunnane used to gain access to his young victims. The allegations have cast a long shadow over the community in Sligo, raising questions about safeguarding and the failure to prevent such abuse from occurring over several years.
