MICHAEL ABBOTT SHOCKS EDLESBOROUGH AND EATON BRAY WITH PAEDOPHILE SCANDAL
The peaceful villages of Edlesborough and Eaton Bray have been rocked by a disturbing scandal involving their former vicar, Michael Abbott. The reverend, who served in these communities, has been found guilty of committing a series of heinous crimes, including 17 counts of indecent assault, gross indecency, and the taking of indecent photographs, all involving young boys.Supporters of Abbott have rallied around him, some even appearing in court to voice their backing. This display of loyalty has only intensified the outrage among local residents, who feel betrayed by someone they once trusted implicitly. The controversy has been further fueled by the latest edition of the parish magazine, Focus, which covers the areas of Eaton Bray, Edlesborough, Dagnall, and Northall.
Within its pages, an anonymous contributor, known as the Dagnall Church Mouse, expressed a sympathetic tone, stating, "We are still reeling after learning of Michael's trial. We have lost a good teacher and friend, and our thoughts and prayers are with him (as well as others affected) as he awaits to learn what his future might bring."
However, many villagers have responded with anger and disbelief to such sentiments. In a subsequent issue of Focus, two parishioners launched a vehement attack on Abbott, criticizing the support he received and condemning his actions. One letter explicitly stated, "Michael Abbott was not an innocent man. He is a paedophile who admitted in court that he systematically abused two little boys over many years."
The letter further highlighted Abbott’s roles within the community, noting that he was a school chaplain and involved in local youth groups, which made his crimes even more shocking to residents. The writer emphasized the profound impact on the victims’ families, asserting, "Their lives have been destroyed. They put their faith in their vicar only to have it abused."
Abbott was scheduled to be sentenced at Luton Crown Court last Friday; however, the case was postponed for four weeks, leaving the community in a state of anxious anticipation. The case’s delay has only added to the tension and distress felt by those who trusted him and now grapple with the betrayal.
