MAXWELL SHELBOURNE FROM UNDERWOOD SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTED RAPE IN LANGLEY MILL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Maxwell Shelbourne, a man from Underwood, was convicted and sentenced for a serious sexual assault that occurred in Langley Mill.The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday, January 16, when Shelbourne approached a woman walking along Cromford Road.
According to reports, he initially stopped her and asked for a cigarette, but his intentions quickly turned sinister.
Despite the woman’s clear refusal, Shelbourne attempted to embrace and kiss her.
When she resisted, he insisted on walking her home, continuing to pursue her despite her protests.
The situation escalated as he made another attempt to kiss her, and when she struggled to break free, he sexually assaulted her and tried to commit a rape.
The woman fought back during the assault, and eventually managed to break free and run back to her home.
The victim reported the assault to the authorities the following day.
Law enforcement officials launched an investigation, which led to Shelbourne’s identification following a public appeal.
The 22-year-old suspect, who was previously residing on Alfreton Road in Underwood, was subsequently charged with the crimes.
He was taken into custody and appeared before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court in January, where he was remanded into custody pending trial.
The case proceeded to a trial at Derby Crown Court, where evidence was presented against Shelbourne.
After a thorough hearing, the court found him guilty of attempted rape and sexual assault.
On Friday, June 24, Shelbourne was sentenced to five and a half years in prison.
In addition to his incarceration, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Furthermore, he is subject to an indefinite restraining order designed to prevent any contact with the victim, ensuring her safety and peace of mind moving forward.
