PRISON FOR ABUSIVE ASSAULT ON EX-PARTNER IN FRONT OF HER CHILDREN

Max Young, aged 30 and from Swn Y Mor in St Davids, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison following a series of violent crimes linked to domestic abuse.

He was convicted of multiple charges including burglary, malicious communication, two counts of common assault, cannabis possession, and a public order offense.

Judge Paul Thomas described Young as a “violent and highly abusive” individual and imposed a three-year restraining order to prevent contact with the victim.

The court proceedings took place at Swansea Crown Court on May 31, where it was revealed that earlier in the year, Young had been in a relationship with the complainant.

On February 18, the couple, along with friends, visited the RAFA Club in St Davids.

During the visit, Young verbally abused the woman and discharged a fire extinguisher at her, escalating the abuse.

The harassment continued into their return home, leaving the victim in a state of trauma.

A few weeks later, on March 2, Young, who was visibly intoxicated, showed up uninvited at the complainant’s home, where she was with her two young children aged eight and two, as well as a friend.

He assaulted her violently kicking her in the chest, throwing her against the stairs, and attacking her friend.

Evidence of this assault was captured by Ring doorbell footage, which recorded the distressing incident.

During the chaos, the victims managed to force Young out of the property, alerted neighbours, and contacted police.

Even after being detained, Young continued his abusive conduct, verbally insulting a female officer and repeatedly spitting inside the police vehicle.

The victim sustained injuries including swelling, bruising, and a fractured finger.

Her suffering was worsened when Young breached bail conditions on March 22, sending a loving text message and leaving a voicemail with a threatening message about her life.

In court, she expressed ongoing fear of what Young might do.

During mitigation, defence lawyer Hannah George noted Young’s increasing issues with alcohol and the deterioration of his relationship with the complainant.

She argued that the time spent in custody had helped Young face his alcohol problems and that he had shown remorse.

Judge Thomas addressed Young directly, condemning his behaviour as “nothing short of violent and highly abusive,” especially toward a woman with whom he had a relationship.

He highlighted the trauma inflicted on the two children witnessing their mother’s suffering and called Young a “horrible abusive individual who attacks women.” The judge also criticised Young’s irresponsible alcohol use and urged him to understand the consequences.

Young received a 15-month sentence for burglary and an extra three months for malicious communications, to run consecutively.

Additionally, he was sentenced to two months concurrently for the assault charges.

The cannabis possession and public order charges were dealt with as part of his guilty pleas, without separate sentencing.

Along with his prison term, a three-year restraining order was issued to keep him from contacting the complainant.

This case underscores the serious repercussions of domestic abuse and reinforces that such conduct will not be tolerated.

The judgment aims to protect victims and emphasises that violence against women will result in strict legal action.
