MAN WHO ATTACKED HIS GIRLFRIEND OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL MONTHS WALKED FREE
A man who engaged in a lengthy pattern of domestic violence against his former partner was permitted to go free from court despite ongoing incidents of aggression, threats, and controlling conduct.Max Campbell, aged 22 and residing on Millersdale Close in Eastham, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court to face charges related to multiple offences involving his ex-partner from August 2023 to January 2024.
The court was told that their relationship deteriorated into a toxic situation after they moved in together, with prosecutors highlighting that Campbell often became aggressive when under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Victims' testimonies detailed that the abuse involved physical assaults such as punching, strangulation, grabbing her by the throat, restricting her airways during arguments, and physical intimidation.
One incident involved Campbell placing his hands around her neck and refusing to release her when she told him to stop.
Another account revealed that Campbell held her by the throat for up to ten minutes, during which she struggled to breathe, and on a different occasion, he covered her mouth and nose during a dispute, preventing her from breathing until she managed to break free.
Additionally, evidence indicated that on New Year’s Eve 2023, he punched her in the ribs and threw a bowl of noodles at her while heavily intoxicated.
When the victim sought to end the relationship and report the abuse, Campbell allegedly pinned her against a door by her upper chest and neck, tried to seize her phone, and continued issuing threats.
Police evidence included photos showing bruises on her leg, arm, and wrist, along with messages she sent pleading for him to stop mistreating her.
Prosecutors emphasised that these violent episodes occurred frequently, leaving her feeling frightened and worried throughout.
A personal statement from the victim described the emotional toll, noting she felt traumatised and fearful about her future.
Her mother addressed the court directly, describing the devastating impact of Campbell’s actions and saying that her daughter had yet to recover from the trauma.
Despite the severity of these offences, Campbell was sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for 20 months.
He was also ordered to complete 25 days of rehabilitation activities and to wear an electronic monitoring tag for two months.
A ten-year restraining order was also imposed, prohibiting him from contact with the victim or her family members.
