MATTHEW STEPHENS FROM SILVERSTONE JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN MARGATE AND KENT
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and the lengths some offenders will go to commit their crimes, Matthew Stephens, a 51-year-old man from Silverstone in Northamptonshire, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a series of sexual offenses committed against a 14-year-old girl in Margate, Kent.According to court reports, Stephens traveled over 150 miles on multiple occasions to meet the young girl in person after initially establishing contact through an internet chat room aimed at young people.
The conversations began in 2002, when Stephens was 36 years old, and involved exchanging text messages and making telephone calls, which eventually led to plans for him to visit Kent.
Once in Margate, Stephens committed numerous sexual offenses against the teenager, acts that have caused significant distress and trauma.
The case came to light after the girl’s reports prompted an investigation by Kent Police.
On Tuesday, August 11, 2015, authorities arrested Stephens, leading to his subsequent charge.
He faced a total of twelve charges, including eight counts of indecent assault on a child, two counts of gross indecency, and two additional serious sexual offenses.
The court proceedings revealed the extent of his predatory behavior and the breach of trust involved in his crimes.
After a thorough legal process, Stephens was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison, a punishment that reflects the severity of his offenses and the impact on his young victim.
