OFFENDER MATTHEW SMITH JAILED FOR PREGNANT EX-PARTNER'S MURDER
Matthew Smith, who worked in a factory, was found guilty of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Becky Parker, in July 2015 at her residence in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. The prosecution established that Smith had strangled Ms.
Parker using cable ties.
He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 18 years.
Court reports revealed that mental health services did not evaluate whether Smith posed a danger to his family while he was undergoing treatment for suicidal thoughts following their separation.
Smith, who later expressed feelings of isolation after his discharge from care, was noted to have missed an appointment after leaving treatment, and it was unclear whether he received notification about it.
He admitted to feeling intense jealousy over Ms.
Parker’s pregnancy by a new partner.
Evidence during the trial showed he was 'unhappy,' and the judge confirmed that his minimum imprisonment period would be 18 years.
The case brought attention to shortcomings in risk assessment procedures for individuals experiencing suicidal ideation and potential threats to family members.
