MATTHEW KEOUGH OF ST ALBANS SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR BRUTAL MURDER IN BISHOP'S STORTFORD
A man identified as Matthew Keough, aged 44 and with no fixed address, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of the murder of his former girlfriend, Sally Campion, aged 45. The tragic incident occurred last July on Bartholomew Road in Bishop's Stortford, a town in Hertfordshire. Keough had previously obtained a restraining order against Ms. Campion, which he violated by carrying out the deadly attack.According to court proceedings, Keough used a claw hammer to inflict a total of 41 separate injuries upon Ms. Campion inside her home. The assault was described as savage and brutal by Judge Andrew Bright QC, who emphasized the severity of the injuries and Keough's violent conduct. The judge ordered that Keough must serve a minimum term of 22 years before being eligible for parole.
During the sentencing hearing, it was revealed that residents of the area witnessed the attack through a half-drawn bedroom blind. Neighbors found Ms. Campion in her bedroom, covered in blood, and she was subsequently rushed to hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The court heard that after the attack, Keough exited her home in a casual manner. Remarkably, he was pursued by two teenagers who demonstrated commendable bravery.
