Consett Animal Abuser
Matthew Beavis, a 20-year-old resident of Consett, has become the focus of intense public outrage following allegations of severe animal cruelty involving a 13-week-old Cane Corso puppy. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation across social media platforms and local communities, with many demanding justice for the innocent animal.

Beavis, originally from Chester-le-Street in County Durham, is currently believed to be in hiding at a hotel after the distressing revelations came to light. Authorities arrested him on suspicion of animal cruelty but subsequently released him on bail as investigations continue. The case has garnered significant attention due to the graphic images and detailed accounts of the puppy’s condition, which have circulated online, causing an emotional response from viewers and animal lovers alike.

Sources close to the investigation reveal that it was Beavis’s own mother who, appalled by her son’s actions, insisted he surrender himself to the police and evicted him from their family home in Consett. The puppy, later named "Lil Redd," was purchased just three weeks prior from breeders Paige Taylor, aged 29, and her partner Phil Trewick, aged 38. The young Italian Mastiff, a breed known for its formidable size, strength, and loyalty, was intended to be a new companion for Beavis. At the time of purchase, Beavis appeared to be genuinely interested in the puppy, accompanied by his mother during the handover, and had agreed to provide regular updates on Lil Redd’s health and wellbeing through photos and communication.

However, shortly after taking the puppy home, Beavis allegedly began avoiding contact and ignoring messages from the breeders. The full extent of the abuse only became apparent when Beavis contacted Paige Taylor and Phil Trewick days before Lil Redd’s scheduled vaccinations, claiming that the puppy had suffered an accident caused by a falling door. Skeptical of this explanation, the breeders demanded to see the dog in person. Beavis initially claimed that Lil Redd was staying at his mother’s house and had been taken to a veterinarian, but these claims proved false. When the breeders recovered the puppy themselves, they were met with a horrifying sight: Lil Redd was unable to walk, her mouth was bleeding, her body was emaciated, and she appeared terrified of human contact.

They immediately took her to a veterinary clinic, where a thorough examination revealed the extent of her injuries. The vet, with over twenty years of experience, discovered nine broken ribs, several missing or shattered teeth, internal mouth swelling that made eating painful, extensive bruising around her throat, and bloodshot eyes. The veterinarian reportedly broke down in tears during the consultation, describing the injuries as consistent with sustained blunt force trauma, not accidental impact.

Under intense questioning from the breeders, Beavis eventually admitted that he had “hit” the puppy. He casually made this confession during a phone call after initially denying any wrongdoing throughout the day. Shockingly, after acknowledging his abuse, Beavis reportedly attended a party, showing no remorse or concern for Lil Redd’s condition, and made no effort to check on her welfare.

One of the breeders expressed their disgust, stating, “He has never once asked how she is or apologized for what he did. He doesn’t care about the damage he caused. She was starving, broken, scared of humans, and left in agony—all at his hands.”

The public’s outrage intensified when details of Beavis’s actions, including his photograph and full name, were shared online. Social media users called him a “pathetic excuse of a human being” and urged the public to remember his face. Many posts emphasized that he should be banned from owning animals forever, condemning his actions as a heinous act of cruelty committed over three weeks.

Durham Constabulary confirmed that Beavis had been arrested and questioned but was released under investigation. A spokesperson stated, “We are aware of comments circulating on social media in relation to this incident and we understand this has caused upset and distress. However, we would ask that you refrain from commenting until officers have concluded their investigation. Enquiries remain ongoing.”

Meanwhile, the breeders have taken Lil Redd back into their care. She is now recovering in a safe environment alongside other dogs, although her physical injuries and emotional trauma remain significant. Veterinary bills have already exceeded £1,000, with further treatment likely necessary to address her ongoing health issues.

Adding to the troubling narrative, a former associate of Beavis came forward, revealing that they were not surprised by the allegations. “He had another dog a while back and that didn’t end well either,” the source claimed. “He’s not stable. He can’t even look after himself, never mind a dog. I’m not shocked this has happened.”

The case has reignited debates around the ownership of so-called “status dogs” like the Cane Corso, which have gained popularity since the ban on XL bully dogs in the UK. Experts warn that irresponsible ownership of such powerful breeds poses serious risks, not only to the animals but also to public safety.

As Beavis remains in hiding and the investigation continues, animal rights advocates and campaigners are calling for harsher penalties for cases of animal cruelty, including lifetime bans and custodial sentences. For now, the focus remains on Matthew Beavis and the horrific cruelty allegedly inflicted upon a defenseless puppy in Consett, County Durham.
