WYKE MAN JAILED FOR REPEATEDLY ATTACKING WOMAN
A man accused of domestic abuse has been imprisoned after showing no signs of remorse for his heinous actions. At Bradford Crown Court on Friday, it was revealed that Mathew Leason struck his victim with a headbutt, deliberately strangled her, and kicked her in the head and body while wearing steel-toe capped boots.
Prosecutor Austin Newman explained that the assault with kicks occurred after Leason pulled the woman off a sofa, resulting in significant bruising.
Although Leason, of Clare Road, Wyke, had no prior convictions, Judge Christopher Smith stated that he had to sentence him for a series of domestic violence incidents.
Mr Newman described the first attack in summer 2023, during which Leason headbutted the woman and caused bleeding from her nose.
The defendant apologized and asked for forgiveness, claiming he would never be violent again, but failed to keep his promise.
In December of the previous year, another altercation turned violent, with Leason choking the woman and strangling her.
During that incident, she was kneeed so hard in the face that she lost consciousness.
Leason was detained in February following additional assaults.
On the day of his trial, he pleaded guilty to charges of intentional strangulation, assault causing actual bodily harm, and common assault.
The judge referred to a pre-sentence report indicating that Leason had exhibited no remorse for his behaviour.
He described the defendant as a significant threat to partners and emphasized that these incidents represented a troubling pattern of domestic abuse.
Addressing Leason via a prison video link, Judge Smith warned of the dangers associated with strangulation, noting that such actions can cause lasting brain damage within seconds.
The court deemed the offences highly serious.
It was noted that Leason had kicked his victim with his steel-toed footwear, causing her painful bruising across her head and body.
He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison and was also issued a five-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim or visiting her neighborhood.
