The article reports that Mason Rudy, a 20-year-old man from Cwmcarn, Caerphilly, engaged in a brutal campaign of domestic violence against his partner. He stood on her neck, pressed down with such force that she struggled to breathe, and threatened to kill her, repeatedly calling her a "f****** rat" and saying "I'll f****** kill you." Rudy's violence was ongoing, involving violence multiple times a week, dragging her around, throwing objects at her, and subjecting her to verbal abuse with messages like "F*** you, I am coming for you and everyone you f****** love will all get hurt," and calling her derogatory names such as "f****** disgrace to life." He falsely accused her of having sex with her brother, prevented her from attending the gym, and caused her injuries during various incidents, including grabbing her face and digging his nails into her causing cuts and bruises, and threatening her family including a five-month-old baby.
The final assault occurred as she was preparing to leave the house, when Rudy threw headphones and a vape at her.
He then assaulted her by punching, grabbing, strangling, and pressing down on her neck with such force that she nearly lost consciousness.
Police were called, and he was arrested after attempting to flee.
Rudy pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, controlling/coercive behavior, threats to kill, assault by beating, and obstructing a police officer.
He was sentenced to 35 months in prison, to serve half before being released on licence.
The court recognized his previous convictions for controlling/coercive behaviour and assault by beating, with a prior incident involving an attack in Newbridge involving threats and punches.
During mitigation, his lawyer noted he accepts responsibility, has ADHD and witnessed domestic abuse as a child.
The judge sentenced him to 35 months’ imprisonment, emphasizing the shamefulness of his conduct and the damage inflicted on his victim.
