BARNSLEY MAN MARTYN JOHNSON JAILED FOR VIOLENT HARASSMENT AND ASSAULT
A Barnsley man has been sentenced to three years in prison for harassment and assaulting a woman, despite being told not to approach her.
In December last year, Martyn Johnson, 37 years old from High Street, Thurnscoe, was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm.
He was given a suspended sentence with orders not to contact the woman.
However, less than three months after his conviction, Johnson continued to bother her, making contact through withheld numbers, shouting at her, demanding her whereabouts, and showing up at locations she was known to visit.
According to South Yorkshire Police, the woman was kept in a state of constant fear.
Johnson escalated the situation by violently attacking her, which caused head injuries.
Authorities issued an arrest warrant, and he was apprehended on June 21.
He was then charged with assault by beating, breaching a restraining order through harassment, and causing actual bodily harm.
Following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court, he was found guilty of all counts.
On Tuesday, Johnson was sentenced to three years in prison and was subject to a new restraining order that prohibits him from contacting the woman or approaching within 100 metres of her property.
PC Kayleigh Banks, who led the investigation, commented: “Johnson’s continued harassment and assault despite his earlier conviction demonstrate a disregard for the law.
I am pleased with this outcome, as it allows the woman to begin rebuilding her life.
Her courage in coming forward and assisting the police has been instrumental in securing this conviction, and I hope it provides her with some sense of justice.”
