ST WEONARDS PAEDOPHILE MARTYN COLWELL SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE IN HEREFORD
In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the community of St Weonards and the wider Hereford area, Martyn Colwell, a 46-year-old groundworks contractor, was found guilty of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young girl. The proceedings took place at Hereford Crown Court, where Colwell appeared to face justice for his actions.Colwell, who had previously denied the charges, was accused of committing eleven counts of rape against a female child under the age of 13, along with additional charges of indecent assault. Despite his attempts to deny the allegations, the jury saw through his lies and convicted him on all counts.
The court was informed that the victim, an 11-year-old girl at the time, was subjected to repeated sexual abuse by Colwell over a period of five years. The abuse was reported to have occurred on a monthly basis, with the young girl enduring hundreds of assaults during this time. The severity of the case was compounded when it was revealed that the girl became pregnant as a result of one of the rapes.
Subsequent DNA testing confirmed that Colwell was the biological father of the child, and it was established that she was only 15 years old at the time of conception. This revelation added a further layer of gravity to the case, highlighting the extent of the abuse inflicted upon the young victim.
In sentencing, the judge handed down a term of 17 years in prison, with a minimum of eight years to be served before any possibility of parole or release. Additionally, Colwell was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance and justice in addressing crimes of this nature, and it serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact such abuse has on victims and their families.
