ELDERLY MAN AVOIDS JAIL AFTER WIFE KILLING BELIEVED TO BE MERCY KILLING
An 82-year-old retired civil engineer named Martin Rudin has been handed a suspended sentence after admitting responsibility for the death of his wife Gabriella, aged 75, in their home in Histon, Cambridgeshire, on New Year’s Eve.
Rudin confessed to suffocating Gabriella, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease and had recently experienced a fall, believing he was performing a merciful act.
The police were notified when Rudin told a carer, ‘She has died.
She has gone in the night,’ and he subsequently reported himself to authorities after taking an overdose.
At the Old Bailey, Judge Mark Bishop sentenced Rudin to two years in prison, suspended for two years.
He stated that Rudin’s wife had pleaded with him to end her life due to her suffering and had expressed a desire to die, which led Rudin to believe he was acting compassionately.
The judge observed that Rudin appeared to be struggling with the emotional burden of caring for his wife, and he believed his actions were motivated by a sense of mercy and kindness.
