MARTIN COX FROM ALDINGBOURNE INVOLVED IN CRUELTY INCIDENT IN BOGNOR REGIS

In a disturbing case that unfolded in the early hours of September 14, 2017, Martin Cox, a resident of Aldingbourne, was involved in an incident that drew the attention of local authorities and animal welfare advocates alike. Cox, who was walking his Rottweiler in Bognor Regis, was observed by a taxi worker engaging in what appeared to be an act of animal cruelty.

The witness, Nicole Redman, an employee of Yellow Star taxis, recounted her experience to the court. She explained that she was outside, engaged in a conversation with fellow drivers, when she noticed Cox staggering along the high street with his dog on a lead. Her immediate impression was that Cox was intoxicated, given his unsteady gait and behavior.

According to Ms. Redman, she witnessed Cox deliver at least three forceful kicks to his dog’s ribs. The kicks were described as deliberate and powerful, comparable to kicking a football, which deeply upset her and caused concern for the animal’s welfare. She promptly contacted the police to report the incident.

Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, arresting Cox around 12:10 a.m. The court heard that Cox denied intentionally kicking his dog, Rocky. Instead, he claimed that he had only swiped at Rocky with his foot to encourage him to walk in the correct direction. Cox stated that Rocky was pulling towards the sea and that he was trying to guide him away from that direction. He insisted, “Rocky wanted to go towards the sea and he was pulling against the direction I was going. I would never kick Rocky, he is my baby and I love him.”

However, the CCTV footage presented during the trial clearly contradicted Cox’s account. The magistrate noted that the footage showed undeniable evidence of a kick, and most reasonable observers would agree that the act was deliberate. The court also acknowledged Cox’s apparent lack of memory regarding the incident, attributing this to his intoxication at the time.

In delivering the verdict, the magistrate emphasized that as a dog owner, Cox should have been aware that kicking his pet would cause unnecessary suffering. The court found him guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, a serious offense under animal welfare laws.

As part of the sentencing, Cox was ordered to pay a total of £882 in fines and costs. Additionally, he was banned from owning or caring for any animals for a period of three years, a restriction that was set to expire in May 2020. This case highlights ongoing concerns about animal cruelty and the importance of responsible pet ownership in the Aldingbourne and Bognor Regis communities.
