MARK LLOYD FROM CHARLWOOD SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN GUILDFORD
In October 2015, Mark Lloyd, a resident of Charlwood, was subjected to a serious criminal investigation and subsequent sentencing related to heinous crimes involving child abuse and exploitation. The case drew significant attention due to the disturbing nature of his offenses, which included the sexual abuse of a two-year-old boy and the production and distribution of indecent images of young children, including a four-year-old girl from Crawley.Mark Lloyd, aged 41 at the time, was brought before Guildford Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges. These charges encompassed two counts of engaging in sexual activities with a child, three counts of creating indecent images of children, three counts of taking such images, and two counts of distributing indecent images. The court proceedings revealed the extent of Lloyd’s depravity, which involved not only direct abuse but also the sharing of illicit material online and engaging in lewd conversations with other paedophiles via Twitter.
The mother of one of Lloyd’s victims, a four-year-old girl from Crawley, expressed her profound disgust and outrage at the relatively lenient sentence of five years imprisonment. She, who cannot be publicly identified due to legal restrictions, described her feelings of sickness upon hearing the sentence. She stated, “It is an absolute joke. When I heard the sentence I felt like I wanted to be sick. He did this to my four-year-old, my baby, and I can’t believe he will now be out of prison within a few years. How is that right? I cannot sleep at night thinking about what he has done.”
Authorities uncovered Lloyd’s activities earlier in the year after police identified suspicious Twitter accounts involved in the distribution of child abuse images. Prosecutor Lee Harris explained that the investigation was initiated when police became aware of two Twitter accounts dedicated to sharing indecent images of children. The first account was active from May 19 of the previous year until February 15 of the current year, and a second account operated from July 3 to August 5 after the first was closed by Twitter. These accounts not only shared images but also contained conversations of a sexual nature involving children.
During the investigation, police discovered photographs depicting girls aged four and 12, which Lloyd had uploaded online. Contact was made with the girls’ parents, who were described as “shocked” by the revelations. Lloyd was detained at his workplace, where he admitted to officers, saying, “yes, yes, yes I’ve been silly,” and making comments suggesting he was aware of his actions’ severity. His phone was seized, revealing a disturbing collection of images, including 122 Category A images—classified as the most serious—along with six movie files, 149 Category B images with four movies, and 450 Category C images.
Further investigation uncovered that Lloyd used a messaging account on his phone to share these images and also uploaded them online. Police also found explicit images of Lloyd himself engaging in sexual acts with a two-year-old boy, which added to the gravity of his offenses.
In his defense, Lloyd’s lawyer, Jeffrey Lamb, argued that his client had “fantasies” involving young children. Lamb stated that Lloyd was “deeply remorseful” and felt shame for his actions. He highlighted that Lloyd maintained close family bonds with his mother and brother, who were “shocked but standing by him.” The defense also suggested that Lloyd’s behavior escalated due to long-term cannabis use and financial stresses, which contributed to his descent into depraved activities. Lamb described Lloyd’s actions as a result of an uncontrollable urge stemming from these factors.
Judge Stephen Climie sentenced Lloyd to a ten-year sexual harm prevention order and ordered that his phone be destroyed. The judge emphasized the severity of Lloyd’s obsession with both possessing and sharing indecent images of children, as well as engaging in sexual activities with minors. Lloyd was also ordered to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions. Lloyd, who resides in Stan Hill, Charlwood, now faces the consequences of his actions, which have caused significant harm and distress to his victims and their families.
