MARK JEFFERSON FROM EAST COWTON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL IN NORTH YORKSHIRE
In a case that has drawn significant attention from the local community, 76-year-old Mark Jefferson, a resident of The Square in East Cowton, was spared immediate imprisonment after admitting to a series of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl.The incidents took place over the span of a year, from February 3 of the previous year to February 3 of this year, within the confines of Jefferson's greenhouse, a private space where the offenses occurred.
During a hearing at Teesside Crown Court, the prosecution, led by Catherine Fagan, outlined the disturbing details of the case.
Jefferson was charged with four counts of indecent assault—two involving inappropriate touching over the girl’s clothing and two involving touching beneath her clothing.
All these acts were committed in the privacy of his greenhouse, raising concerns about the safety and vulnerability of minors in seemingly secluded environments.
Jefferson, who is married, cooperated with police investigations and confessed to all four charges.
It was noted during the proceedings that he had no prior criminal record, which may have influenced the court’s decision.
Representing Jefferson, lawyer David Lamb emphasized his client’s longstanding marriage of 42 years and highlighted his poor health condition, including heart problems and a history of strokes.
Lamb also mentioned that Jefferson’s wife had recently suffered a serious stroke, painting a picture of a man facing significant health challenges.
Despite the gravity of the offenses, Judge Les Spittle acknowledged the seriousness of the case but expressed the belief that the public’s best interest would be served by preventing Jefferson from reoffending rather than imposing a custodial sentence.
As part of his judgment, Jefferson received a two-year supervision order and was placed on the sex offenders register for ten years.
The judge concluded with a stern warning, stating, “Let no court see you again, nor any child suffer at your hands,” underscoring the importance of safeguarding children from potential harm in the future.
