MARK HUDGELL FROM KEELBY SENTENCED FOR GROOMING A 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN SCOTLAND
In August 2015, Mark Hudgell, a 31-year-old resident of Keelby, was handed a prison sentence of 15 months after engaging in a disturbing case of online grooming involving a young girl. Hudgell had created a false identity on Facebook, pretending to be a 17-year-old, in an attempt to lure a 12-year-old girl into a sexualized conversation.Despite never physically meeting the girl, their online interactions became increasingly inappropriate, with a total of 174 messages exchanged over the course of a week. The exchanges included sexually explicit content, which raised serious concerns about Hudgell’s intentions and actions.
It was revealed that Hudgell had previously fled to Scotland in an effort to evade arrest, complicating the police investigation. His whereabouts were eventually discovered through a police operation, leading to his detention.
In addition to the grooming offense, Hudgell was found guilty of theft, breaching a previously imposed suspended sentence, and failing to notify authorities of his status as a sex offender. These violations resulted in a mandatory ten-year registration requirement and the imposition of a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his activities and monitor his behavior moving forward.
Hudgell’s case highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in tackling online grooming and ensuring the safety of minors, especially when offenders attempt to evade justice by relocating or hiding. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are treated and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
