'VERY DANGEROUS' MAN JAILED FOR 15 YEARS FOR RAPE AND VIOLENT OFFENCES
A man described by police as a “very dangerous individual who preys on women” has been jailed for 15 years for rape and other violent offences.
Mark Hirons, 38, of Lydbury North near Bishop’s Castle and Clun, was found guilty of rape, assault and intentional strangulation following a trial relating to offences committed against a woman in Telford.
Police became aware of the attacks in May last year when the victim reported the offences.
Hirons was arrested shortly afterwards, and a full investigation was launched.
He was charged and later found guilty by a jury in November.
He appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Monday, February 9, where he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The court also imposed a restraining order to protect the victim.
Detective Constable Darren Wincott, from Telford’s Protecting Vulnerable People team, welcomed the sentence.
He said: “I am very grateful for the sentence the judge has handed to Hirons, who is clearly a very dangerous individual who preys on women.
“I would like to commend the victim in this, who has been incredibly brave throughout this investigation.
“I hope the sentence can offer her some form of closure and will enable her to move forward with her life.”
