MARK HARDY FROM WALLASEY CONVICTED OVER DOG'S SUFFERING AND DEATH

Mark Gerard Hardy, a dog breeder from Wallasey, was found guilty of neglecting the health and welfare of a pregnant schnauzer named Jenny, which ultimately led to her suffering and death. Hardy, born on December 24, 1961, and now deceased since May 2019, resided on Sandymount Drive in Wallasey, CH45 0LJ. The case drew significant attention due to the tragic circumstances surrounding Jenny's prolonged labor and the breeder’s failure to seek timely veterinary assistance.

According to court records, Jenny, a large black schnauzer, went into labor but experienced complications that persisted for four days. The incident came to light when she collapsed on February 27, 2016. Hardy initially contacted his veterinarian, who advised him to bring Jenny into the clinic for examination and treatment. However, Hardy did not follow this advice, neglecting to take her to the vet at that critical time.

Over the next two days, Jenny’s condition worsened considerably. Recognizing her deteriorating state, Hardy finally took her to the veterinary clinic. The veterinarian examined her and concluded that her condition was too severe for recovery. A decision was made to euthanize her to prevent further suffering. A post-mortem examination revealed that Jenny had been suffering from a bacterial infection of the uterus, which had been left untreated during her labor. This infection was a significant factor in her decline and death.

Inspector Anthony Joynes of the Wirral RSPCA expressed his concern over the case, stating, “Jenny suffered a lot of pain and discomfort in the last few days of her life, which could have been lessened if she had been taken to the vets promptly. It is not acceptable for a dog to go on in labour for days on end.” He emphasized the importance of pet owners seeking immediate veterinary help when their animals show signs of distress or illness. Joynes added, “If it appears that a dog is struggling with giving birth or begins to struggle shortly after, then it is likely some expert help may be required.”

He further explained the legal responsibilities of pet owners under the Animal Welfare Act, which imposes a duty of care. Hardy’s failure to act in Jenny’s best interest was seen as a breach of this duty, resulting in unnecessary suffering and her eventual death. The inspector criticized Hardy’s conduct, noting that as a breeder expecting to profit from a planned litter, he should have prioritized the health and welfare of Jenny above all else. Unfortunately, this was not the case in this instance.

In court, Hardy was sentenced to a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs amounting to £1,582. Notably, he was not banned from keeping animals. The case was covered by the Wirral Globe and Liverpool Echo. It was also noted that Mark Hardy passed away in May 2019, two years after the incident.

Overall, this case highlights the critical importance of responsible pet ownership and the legal obligations breeders have to ensure the health and well-being of their animals. Jenny’s tragic story serves as a reminder that neglect and failure to seek prompt veterinary care can have devastating consequences.
