Cowdenbeath Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing series of incidents spanning over a year, Mark Beveridge, a resident of Cowdenbeath, has been convicted of multiple sexual offences involving the indecent exposure of himself to young girls in the town. The case was heard at Dunfermline Sheriff Court, where Beveridge was found guilty after a comprehensive seven-day trial that brought to light the extent of his predatory behavior.
Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Beveridge, aged 29 at the time of sentencing, had repeatedly targeted girls aged between 11 and 14 as they walked through various parts of Cowdenbeath. His modus operandi involved appearing next to the victims with his lower body exposed, often revealing his genitals in a sexual manner. On at least one occasion, he chased after a terrified young girl, adding a threatening element to his misconduct.
Despite his denials, the victims were called to testify, some of whom became visibly distressed as they recounted their traumatic experiences behind screens in the courtroom. Their testimonies painted a disturbing picture of a man who had been preying on young girls for an extended period. The court heard that Beveridge had previously been convicted of a sexual assault involving a customer at a pet shop, indicating a pattern of concerning behavior.
The offences took place at various locations within Cowdenbeath, including Park Road, Farm Road, Rowan Terrace, Chapel Street, Blamey Crescent, Craigbeath Court, Blackburn Drive, Johnston Park, Southfield, and Leuchatsbeath Drive. Specific incidents include an event on July 23, 2014, when Beveridge exposed himself to an 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl at Park Road and Farm Road. On the same day, he allegedly exposed himself to two 13-year-old girls and then followed two 15-year-olds with his lower body exposed.
Further incidents occurred on December 30, 2014, at Rowan Terrace and Chapel Street, where he exposed himself to two 13-year-olds, and on the same day, to two 15-year-olds at the same location. On March 13, 2015, a 12-year-old girl was targeted at Blamey Crescent, and in April of that year, two 15-year-old girls were exposed to him at Craigbeath Court. The pattern continued into May 2015, with incidents at Blackburn Drive involving girls aged 13 and 14, and in July 2015 at Johnston Park and Southfield, where two 14-year-olds were present.
Another distressing account involved a girl walking past bushes with her friend, who noticed Beveridge standing beside the bushes without trousers. She described how he did not speak but was clearly exposed, prompting her and her friend to run away in fear. She was so upset that she could not testify in court. Additionally, a 17-year-old girl recounted an incident on April 2, 2015, when she saw Beveridge touching himself with his trousers down near a takeaway in Cowdenbeath High Street. She described her immediate reaction of screaming and fleeing the scene.
Another 17-year-old described an encounter on December 30, 2014, where she saw Beveridge with a black bomber jacket, Timberland boots, and no trousers, standing close to her and her friend. She recounted how he was right next to her, and she was overwhelmed with fear, unsure of how to react as he followed them after they ran away.
Following the evidence and testimonies, Sheriff Charles MacNair ordered a report and deferred sentencing until April 24. Beveridge was also placed on the sex offenders register as part of his sentence. The court also noted that Beveridge had previously been subjected to a public protection order in August 2015 after he sexually assaulted a female customer in his Cowdenbeath pet shop by touching her under her clothing. He was subsequently sentenced to 225 hours of unpaid community work and ordered to pay £400 in compensation.
These convictions highlight a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior by Mark Beveridge, whose actions have caused significant distress to multiple young victims in Cowdenbeath. The court's decision underscores the seriousness of his offences and the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable members of the community from such harmful conduct.
