MARIUS RADU SENTENCED IN SWANSEA FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING UNDERAGE GIRL FROM MUMBLES
In April 2018, a disturbing case unfolded in Swansea involving Marius Radu, a builder originally from Romania, who was convicted of engaging in sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl. Radu, who was 36 at the time of the incident, had established a relationship with the young girl in December 2016, which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent sentencing.According to the court proceedings, the sexual encounter took place within a residence in Swansea. Prosecutor Helen Powell detailed that Radu had told the girl that “something bad” would happen if she disclosed what had transpired between them. This threat appeared to be an attempt to silence her and prevent her from revealing the abuse.
Following the incident, the girl’s parents noticed a significant change in her behavior. She became more withdrawn, spending increased amounts of time alone at home and reducing her social interactions with friends. Concerned, her parents questioned her, and she eventually confided in them about the inappropriate relationship with Radu.
Further investigation revealed that Radu’s mobile phone contained evidence of his online activity, including visits to websites that suggested an interest in young girls. This evidence supported the allegations and painted a troubling picture of his intentions.
In an impact statement read out in court, the girl’s mother expressed her distress, noting that her daughter had become noticeably more isolated and emotionally affected since the incident. Her withdrawal was a source of great concern for the family.
Radu, who was residing on Mumbles Road in Mumbles, Swansea, pleaded guilty to the charge of sexual activity with a child during his court appearance. His guilty plea was taken into account during sentencing, which was delivered by Judge Peter Heywood.
Judge Heywood emphasized that Radu must have been fully aware that the girl was underage. He clarified that UK law, not Romanian law, was applicable in this case, underscoring the jurisdictional authority of the British legal system.
In recognition of his guilty plea, Radu received a sentence of four years in prison, with half of that time to be served behind bars before he is released on licence. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
