According to reports, the assault occurred on Sunday, May 1, 2022, after the woman and Page had spent time together at the bar. Following their evening together, the woman left the establishment with Page and was subsequently taken to a public stairway in Rye, where the assault took place. The victim, traumatized and seeking help, reported the assault to Sussex Police the very next day, demonstrating remarkable courage in the face of her trauma.
Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, and specialist units provided support to the woman during the investigation. On the same afternoon that the report was made, officers arrested Marcus Page, who was 26 years old at the time. The case proceeded through the judicial system, and at Hove Crown Court, Page was put on trial and ultimately convicted of rape on April 25, 2025.
Following his conviction, the case moved to Guildford Crown Court, where on June 19, he was sentenced to serve five years in prison. Additionally, the court imposed a ten-year restraining order, prohibiting Page from contacting or approaching the victim.
Detective Sergeant Auryn Liddiard commented on the case, emphasizing the victim’s bravery: “This young woman made it explicitly clear that she did not consent to sexual activity, which Page ignored for his own vile gratification. She has shown incredible resilience, despite the extreme trauma she endured, to report the incident to police. Thanks to her courage and support, law enforcement was able to swiftly apprehend Page. Thanks to her resilience in supporting this investigation, Marcus Page has faced justice for his crime and can pose no further risk to the public.”
