WOMAN TELLS OF SICK AND 'NEVER-ENDING' CAMPAIGN OF HARASSMENT BY THE MAN SHE BRIEFLY WENT OUT WITH
For nearly a decade, a woman suffered from persistent and menacing harassment by Mahfuzur Tarafdar, an individual described as being 'utterly obsessed' with her.Their relationship had been short but violent, and after its end, she quickly wished she had never met him.
Despite a restraining order meant to prevent contact, Tarafdar continued to breach it routinely, sending numerous online messages and making attempted calls many of which contained expressions of love, references to her new partner and child, and sexual content.
These actions deeply distressed her, and prosecutors noted that the breach had caused her significant emotional damage.
She revealed that she has known Tarafdar for over ten years and that he has previously served time in prison for assault and malicious communications.
Her numerous police reports over the years documented his unwanted contact, threats, and even vandalism, including throwing a brick through her window.
At the time of his latest offence, Tarafdar was on licence, having been released from prison just two weeks prior after serving five months for violating a restraining order.
His attempt to appeal the new conviction was unsuccessful.
During court proceedings, he left the hearing early and was sentenced in his absence to two years in prison, with no legal representation after prior solicitors withdrew due to issues with him.
Judge Kate Rayfield condemned his actions, stating he had severely disrupted her life, causing anxiety, embarrassment, and emotional harm.
She remarked that Tarafdar seemed incapable of moving on, repeatedly offending over a decade, and that his ongoing breaches demonstrated his dangerous obsession.
The court upheld the two-year sentence and the indefinite restraining order remains in place for her protection.
