SWINDON MAN JAILED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND ARSON AFTER POLICE CONFESSION
A RAPIST named Liam Jones, 24, called the police and confessed to molesting a primary school girl when he was in his early teens. He also admitted to using a lighter and deodorant can to set fire to a barn in 2015, which destroyed hay worth £7,000.
The court heard that Jones encountered a series of sexual assaults on a girl five years his junior, taking place between 2008 and 2010 at her home near Westbury.
According to prosecutor Rob Welling, the assaults began when she was about seven or eight years old.
He stated, “When she first resisted this he went and got a biology book, showed her some pictures and said this is right and pressured her to carry on doing what it was he wanted to do.” Jones had raped the girl at least three times, including in the bathroom of his family home.
He threatened her, called her derogatory names, and once came into her bedroom with a knife, frightening her.
The girl was advised to report the abuse by a counselling service in 2016, but did not do so until Jones himself approached the police two years later.
As a result, he was charged with two counts of rape, sexual touching, and arson.
Jones, who had no fixed address, was sentenced to five years imprisonment at Swindon Crown Court after appearing via video link from HMP Bullingdon.
Defense lawyer Richard Onslow mentioned that Jones had a troubled childhood and suffered from mental health issues.
He also highlighted that it was unusual for him to contact police voluntarily.
The court heard he was remorseful and expressed guilt over his actions.
