LEWIS THORPE OF WARRINGTON JAILED FOR GROOMING TEEN GIRLS IN MARCH 2014

In March 2014, an 18-year-old man named Lewis Thorpe was sentenced to 40 months in a Young Offenders Institute after grooming schoolgirls on Facebook for sex. Chester Crown Court was told on Friday that Thorpe traveled from his Nottingham residence to Warrington by train to meet 14-year-old girls and coercing them into sexual activity. He added the girls as ‘friends’ on Facebook and took one of them to have sex in the fields at Bennetts Rec, Padgate.

Judge Andrew Hatton sentenced Thorpe, who resides at Gritts Common, Cottsgrave, stating: “Your victims you met through Facebook and you had cultivated their friendship with a view to having sexual intercourse. I anticipate all three victims blame themselves and they should not. They should blame an 18-year-old man who should know better. You made determined efforts to have sex with girls you knew were only 14 years of age. You clearly have a fascination with having sex with young girls. You knew it was wrong.”

Thorpe was seen crying when the verdict was announced, sobbing “oh my God.” The court also learned that he was planning to study at the University of Chester.

The offences took place during the summer holidays in July 2013, when Thorpe targeted schoolgirls. Their conversations quickly became sexual; he asked for pictures of them in underwear and arranged meetings.

He told the first victim he was 16, and they had consensual sex at his home. Afterward, he asked her to leave because his father was returning from work and provided her directions to the bus stop.

The second victim, also 14 and aware that Thorpe was 18, met him at Warrington Central train station on September 16. They went to the fields at Bennetts Rec, where they had sex. She felt ‘uncomfortable’ and ‘frightened,’ but did not express concern. She reminded Thorpe she was 14, to which he replied that it “didn’t bother him.”

The third victim was met on October 10 in Warrington. The court heard Thorpe became angry when she refused sex after he had gone to buy condoms at Asda in Cockhedge Centre. Her parents eventually called the police, who found Thorpe with her and took him back to the train station.

An investigation uncovered evidence of the other victims. Thorpe pleaded guilty on February 3 to two counts of sexual activity with a child under 16, and one count of meeting a female child under 16 following sexual grooming.

His defense lawyer, David Rose, stated that Thorpe had broken down during the police interview, describing him as “deeply distressed and shamed.” Rose added, “He is a young man with supportive parents, a work ethic, hoping to go to university, courteous on every occasion I have seen him.”
