WEST AUCKLAND MAN LAWRENCE COGLAN JAILED FOR THREATENING EX-PARTNER
A man who sent a series of vile and threatening messages to his former partner while her father was gravely ill has been sentenced to jail.Lawrence Coglan threatened to kill her and rip her face off during abusive phone calls while he was intoxicated.
The 63-year-old has a history of stalking and violent behavior, as revealed in court.
Prosecutor Laura Peto stated that the couple had been together for 18 months before their relationship ended, after which Coglan became increasingly abusive.
On January 2, Coglan made 12 threatening calls to his ex-partner, despite her attempts to block his number, leaving voicemails that included threats like ‘I will stab you, I mean it now’, ‘get the police because I am going to rip your f****** face off’, and ‘I’m going to f****** kill you’.
He continued to contact her later, without leaving messages, causing distress especially as she was visiting her seriously ill father.
Coglan has 37 convictions for 97 offences, including previous stalking and violence.
He pleaded guilty to stalking involving the fear of violence between January 2 and 17.
His lawyer noted he was drinking heavily at the time and had taken steps to address his alcohol issues, also stating there was no in-person contact.
Judge Timothy Stead sentenced Coglan to ten months in prison due to his poor health, and reminded that he had a prior 32-month prison sentence in 2021 for stalking and related offences.
Coglan was also ordered to abide by a five-year restraining order.
