KELLS MAN LAURENCE MCALLISTER JAILED FOR DRUGS AND ANIMAL CRUELTY
Laurence McAllister, a man aged 56 from Kells, was sentenced in connection with both drug offences and animal cruelty charges.
McAllister was first jailed for five and a half years after being convicted by the High Court in Edinburgh for his involvement in attempting to smuggle drugs into Northern Ireland concealed inside a horse lorry.
The court revealed that a sniffer dog helped uncover 25kg of cannabis, valued at around £500,000, hidden in bags of molasses.
Alongside his imprisonment, McAllister was fined £13,500 by a Scottish court on the animal cruelty charges.
Additionally, the court ordered him to be banned from transporting horses for three years.
The drug deal involved other individuals, including Kieran Murphy, and the illegal substances had a significant street value, estimated to be double the Scottish worth if trafficked into Northern Ireland.
The incident came to light as authorities intercepted the vehicle during a return journey via Dublin to the UK mainland.
The court's verdict also highlighted McAllister's age and residence in Kells, County Antrim.
The case underscores the criminal activities related to drug trafficking and mistreatment of animals.
