KYLE CURRAN FROM TOWNHILL FACES SERIOUS CHARGES IN EDINBURGH AND DUNFERMLINE
Kyle Curran, an 18-year-old resident of Dundas Street, Townhill, found himself at the center of a high-profile legal case involving allegations of sexual assault and threats. The case was heard at the High Court in Edinburgh, where it was revealed that Curran had received a threatening message from a woman’s mother via social media. In the message, she warned him, saying, "Do you know my daughter could get you done for f****** rape?" and also informed him that she was involving the police in the matter.During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Curran responded to the threatening message by apologizing, acknowledging that he should not have engaged in such conduct. The court heard that the victim, a woman who was visibly distressed, recounted her traumatic experience of being raped at a residence in Rosyth in May 2022. The details of the assault were particularly disturbing, as the court learned that during the incident, Curran repeatedly touched the victim’s body, made sexual remarks, and physically restrained her.
In addition to the charges related to the Rosyth incident, Curran faced a separate allegation of sexual assault in Dunfermline in September 2021. However, he was ultimately acquitted of this second charge, with the court ruling that the evidence did not support a conviction.
Throughout the trial, Curran maintained a controversial stance, claiming that the sexual encounter was consensual and that the victim wanted to participate. He stated in court, "It was definitely consensual. She wanted to do it." Despite his assertions, the jury found him guilty of the serious charge of rape.
Following the verdict, Judge William Summers addressed Curran directly, emphasizing the gravity of the case. He acknowledged that Curran was a first-time offender with no prior convictions and was only 18 years old. Nevertheless, the judge warned him that a lengthy custodial sentence was highly likely in the future, stating, "It is a virtual certainty that in due course the court will impose a lengthy custodial sentence."
In light of the seriousness of the case, the judge rejected a request to continue bail and ordered Curran to be remanded in custody. A background report is now being prepared to inform the sentencing process. The judge also informed the jury that the case was particularly difficult and emotionally taxing. As part of the court’s decision, Curran was placed on the sex offenders' register, and the sentencing was adjourned until April 23 at the High Court in Aberdeen.
