The woman didn't want Doherty in the house, but he pushed his way through the front door and the argument continued.
She threw a packet of blueberries at him and then Doherty placed both his hands around her neck and she said the force was such that she struggled to breathe.
He then placed his hand over her mouth, the court heard.
As a result of the assault on March 11, 2023, she now suffers with extreme anxiety, frequent migraines, panic attacks and she had self-harmed.
Judge Jonathan Lockhart told Doherty that after this incident, his victim has suffered extreme anxiety.
"You had an argument, she didn't want you in the house, you pushed your way in," said Judge Lockhart.
"The argument continued, she threw some blueberries at you.
Your response was utterly over the top.
You put your hands to her neck then removed your hand and covered her mouth.
You were seeking to impose your power upon her as a stronger man." Judge Lockhart jailed 36-year-old Doherty for five months and said that as he posed a risk to his victim, he was also imposing a ten-year restraining order meaning that he must have no contact with her.
He will also be under supervision for one year upon his release.
The court heard that as Doherty had already spent a considerable amount of time in custody on remand, the prison service would determine when his exact release from custody would be.
