KRISTOPHER MORGAN'S CRUELTY IN PARK: ELDERLY DOG LEFT TO SUFFER IN MERTHYR TYDFIL
Kristopher Daniel Morgan, born around 1987 and residing at Brewery Court in Merthyr Tydfil CF47 8FG, has been convicted of a serious case of animal neglect that shocked the local community. The case centers around his elderly dog, a beloved American bulldog-type named Buddie, who was found in a deplorable state after months of suffering due to Morgan’s neglect.According to court records and investigations, Morgan allowed his aging pet to endure extreme hardship from early February to early May 2023. During this period, the dog was subjected to unnecessary pain and distress because Morgan failed to seek or provide essential veterinary care. The neglect was so severe that Buddie was discovered straying on Brecon Road in Merthyr Tydfil, a situation that ultimately led to his rescue by a concerned member of the public.
When the individual found Buddie, the dog was in a critically weakened condition, emaciated, and covered with lumps. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the person took the dog to a nearby veterinary clinic. Veterinarians quickly identified that Buddie was suffering from significant health issues, including weight loss and multiple lumps, and made the decision to euthanize him immediately due to his suffering. The vets also discovered that the dog’s condition was so dire that he was in pain and distress, with visible signs of neglect such as a prolapsed penis and extreme emaciation.
Following the discovery, the RSPCA was notified and took swift action. Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Cooper was involved in the case and collected Buddie’s remains from the veterinary clinic the following day. She described the condition of the dog in stark terms, stating, “I saw every bone in his body, he was covered in lumps, and his penis was prolapsed.” The police seized Buddie’s body to facilitate further investigation by the RSPCA.
Investigations revealed that Morgan claimed Buddie had been missing for approximately seven weeks, attributing his absence to poor fencing in his garden. He also reported that he first noticed a small lump about the size of a ping pong ball on the right side of Buddie’s neck roughly seven to eight weeks prior. Morgan stated that since then, the dog had been reluctant to eat and was losing weight. However, a veterinarian’s statement contradicted Morgan’s timeline, suggesting that Buddie’s suffering likely extended beyond seven weeks, possibly lasting three months or more.
The vet expressed concern that Morgan did not seek veterinary treatment for the lumps or weight loss, which could have alleviated the dog’s suffering. The veterinarian’s opinion was that Buddie had been enduring pain, weakness, and malnutrition for an extended period, with the lumps pressing on his food pipe and causing regurgitation. The vet emphasized that such neglect was a clear failure of Morgan’s duty of care, and that the dog’s prolonged suffering was entirely preventable.
In court, the veterinarian’s testimony painted a grim picture of Buddie’s condition, highlighting that the dog’s suffering was likely ongoing for more than three months. The vet criticized Morgan for neglecting to seek urgent veterinary attention once the symptoms appeared, which would have significantly improved Buddie’s quality of life.
Deputy Chief Inspector Cooper expressed her sorrow over the case, acknowledging the tragic outcome for Buddie. She thanked the member of the public who found and took the dog to the vets, as well as the veterinary staff who provided emergency care. She stated, “Sadly, he had been neglected, and the failure to provide veterinary care meant that he would have been suffering for some time.”
As a result of his actions, Morgan was sentenced to a 12-month community order, which includes 135 hours of unpaid work and a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £500 in costs and was disqualified from keeping any animals for ten years, a ban that will expire in December 2033. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the devastating consequences of neglecting vulnerable animals in the community of Merthyr Tydfil.
