Calderbank Domestic Abuser
A woman living in Calderbank endured a period of intense fear and emotional distress due to her abusive partner, Kristopher Kerrigan. The situation was so severe that she would often barricade herself inside a bedroom whenever Kerrigan, aged 36, from Pine Grove, Calderbank, had been drinking heavily. This pattern of abuse and intimidation persisted over several years, creating a climate of constant fear for the victim.

Kristopher Kerrigan has recently been taken into custody and is currently awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to domestic abuse. The case was heard at Hamilton Sheriff Court, where disturbing details about the victim’s suffering were revealed. It was disclosed that Kerrigan’s abusive behavior had a profound impact on her mental and physical health, leading to significant weight loss and heightened anxiety. The court heard that Kerrigan’s derogatory comments about her contributed heavily to her emotional turmoil.

The court proceedings outlined a disturbing timeline of abuse spanning from 2019 to 2023. During this period, Kerrigan engaged in various aggressive acts, including pouring water over the woman and sending her threatening messages. Rebecca Clark, the prosecutor, described the pattern of behavior: “The accused would drink most Saturdays. The victim would use furniture to barricade herself in a room because she was scared when he was under the influence. He became aggressive and she didn't know what he would do.”

One particularly alarming incident involved Kerrigan physically assaulting the woman by slapping her, which prompted her to contact the police. When officers arrived at her residence, they found her crying and visibly bruised. Despite the injuries, she chose not to disclose further details to the officers. Kerrigan’s reaction to her reporting the incident was one of anger and blame; he berated her, claiming: “You are ruining my life. I could have left you black and blue and you still shouldn't have phoned the police.”

Further complications arose when Kerrigan failed to appear for his scheduled trial in August. Instead of attending court, he went on holiday to Greece. During his absence, he sent threatening messages, including one that stated: “I swear I'll murder you. I'm coming for you.” His return from Greece was marked by his arrest at Manchester Airport, where authorities detained him. Since then, Kerrigan has remained in custody, facing serious charges.

During the court hearing, defense lawyer Luke O'Curry described Kerrigan’s relationship with the victim as “toxic” and acknowledged that Kerrigan’s messages were “abhorrent.” However, he argued that these words were “empty threats” without any real intention to carry out violence. Despite this, Sheriff John Hamilton decided to defer Kerrigan’s sentencing until next month to allow for the preparation of background reports. The sheriff also refused bail, citing the gravity of the offences and concerns that Kerrigan might attempt to flee, considering his flight risk status.
