Shotts Child Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the community of Shotts, Kevin Donnelly, aged 30, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of serious sexual offenses involving underage girls, as well as possessing a large collection of child pornography. The details of his crimes reveal a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that spanned several years and involved manipulation through social media platforms.
According to court records, Donnelly contacted a teenage girl via a social networking site, where he persuaded her to visit his residence in Shotts, Lanarkshire. Over multiple visits, Donnelly engaged in sexual activities with the girl, who was only 15 years old at the time. During these encounters, he recorded videos of their interactions, which later became a crucial piece of evidence in his prosecution. Police raids on Donnelly’s home uncovered not only the footage of these encounters but also images of other young girls, raising further concerns about his activities.
The investigation was triggered after the girl falsely claimed she had been raped, prompting police to search Donnelly’s house. During questioning, the girl initially made four statements alleging that Donnelly had forced her into sexual acts. However, after police discovered the explicit images and videos on Donnelly’s computer, she retracted her previous accusations, admitting they were lies. This revelation did not diminish the severity of his crimes, which had already been established through other evidence.
At Hamilton Sheriff Court, Donnelly pleaded guilty to five charges, including unlawful sexual activity with a girl aged 14, and continuing to have sex with her when she was under 16. He also admitted to engaging in sexual acts with the 15-year-old girl at her request, as well as possessing a substantial collection of child pornography. The court heard that between January 2004 and December 2011, Donnelly had accumulated a cache of 10,524 indecent photographs and home movies, meticulously cataloged with details such as the girl’s name, age, and the number of visits she made to his home.
Following his guilty plea, Donnelly was transferred to the High Court in Edinburgh for sentencing, where he received a 44-month prison term. The judge, Lord Bracadale, emphasized the gravity of the offenses, highlighting the pattern of sexual misconduct involving minors under the age of 16. He also ordered that Donnelly’s period of supervision be extended by three years after his release, ensuring close monitoring of his activities.
During the sentencing, defense advocate Margaret Breslin explained that Donnelly had been seeking psychological help since 2003 and was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, which contributed to his compulsive behaviors and need for orderliness. She also noted that psychologists believed Donnelly exhibited immature tendencies, likening his behavior to that of a teenager.
Judge Lord Bracadale condemned Donnelly’s actions, stating, “Having made contact with girls on a social networking site on the internet, you persuaded them to travel to your house where you persuaded them to have sex. You also filmed the sexual activity with one of them and with other girls.” The judge’s order also includes a further three-year extension of Donnelly’s license conditions, reflecting the seriousness with which the court views his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision to protect the community.
