KEVIN CHAFFEY FROM ALRESFORD JAILED FOR THOUSANDS OF INDECENT IMAGES AND CHILD SEXUAL OFFENSES
In a significant case that has shocked the community of Alresford, Kevin Chaffey, a 51-year-old man, has been sentenced to prison for possessing an alarming number of indecent images depicting children. The conviction follows a detailed investigation by law enforcement authorities that uncovered the extent of Chaffey’s illegal activities, which included the possession of over 7,000 illicit images, some of which featured young girls as young as five years old being subjected to sexual abuse.Chaffey, who was already serving time for breaching a sexual harm prevention order, faced additional sentencing at Winchester Crown Court. The court heard that he had admitted to three charges related to the possession of indecent images. Prosecutor Richard Martin revealed that the police had discovered a total of 7,111 illegal images on Chaffey’s devices, highlighting the severity of his offenses.
During the proceedings, the court was informed of Chaffey’s long-standing history of sexual misconduct, which dates back to 1995. His past convictions include indecent exposure, assault, and the creation and distribution of child sexual abuse imagery. This pattern of offending underscores a troubling pattern of predatory behavior spanning nearly three decades.
Judge Adam Feest KC delivered the sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Chaffey’s crimes. He stated, “You have an appalling record for sexual offences and importantly for today’s case, possession of indecent images of children, a large number of which depict young girls being sexually abused.” The judge further noted that Chaffey had been in breach of a sexual harm prevention order shortly after it was issued, which resulted in an additional ten months being added to his sentence. Furthermore, a new sexual harm prevention order was imposed, this time for a duration of ten years, to restrict Chaffey’s future activities and protect potential victims.
In a related case from April 2022, Chaffey’s disturbing behavior was again brought to light. He was found to have imported a child-like latex sex doll from China, an act that drew widespread condemnation. Despite his multiple convictions for sexual crimes, Chaffey avoided a prison sentence for this particular offense. Court records reveal that he also downloaded hundreds of extreme pornographic images, citing loneliness as a motive.
Chaffey’s conduct outside the courtroom was equally confrontational. During the proceedings, he was publicly confronted by his brother, who launched into an expletive-laden tirade, calling him “an embarrassment to the family, a disgrace, a waste of breath.” The brother also pointed at Chaffey and warned others, “He is a paedo, remember his face,” before security personnel escorted him out of the Winchester Law Courts.
Prosecutor Graham Gilbert detailed that Chaffey, then aged 49 and residing on Meryon Road in Alresford, had admitted to eight offenses, including seven involving indecent images. Many of these images depicted children as young as four or five years old, with the total number of images reaching approximately 6,000. The police investigation was triggered when UK border security intercepted a package from China on April 3, 2021, containing the latex sex doll bearing Chaffey’s address. He was subsequently arrested on April 19, 2021.
The court was informed that the doll, costing £350 and standing about three feet tall, featured adult female breasts, further illustrating the disturbing nature of Chaffey’s interests. His extensive criminal history, which includes indecent assault, indecent exposure, and soliciting, dates back to 1994, revealing a persistent pattern of sexual misconduct.
Judge Charles Longley, presiding over the case, acknowledged the seriousness of the offenses, stating, “It is clear that you have a sexual interest in children, and many of the images are quite appalling. These are real children, and the damage caused is real.” Recognizing the need for intervention, the judge suspended Chaffey’s prison sentence, sentencing him to 24 months in jail, suspended for two years. Additionally, Chaffey was ordered to participate in a sex offenders’ treatment program, undertake up to 30 days of rehabilitation activities, and complete 200 hours of unpaid work. He was also mandated to pay a surcharge of £140 and costs of £340 within three months, aiming to facilitate his rehabilitation and prevent future offending.
