HORNDEAN MOTHER KERRY ROBERTS SENT EXPLICIT TEXTS TO 14-YEAR-OLD BOY IN HORNEDEAN AND CATHERINGTON
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Horndean, Kerry Roberts, a 44-year-old woman, has been convicted of engaging in inappropriate and illegal communications with a 14-year-old boy. Roberts, who was employed on the support staff at Catherington Infant School near Horndean, was found guilty of grooming the young teenager through a series of explicit messages sent via text and online platforms. The case came to light after the boy’s mother noticed a change in her son’s behavior. Concerned about the sudden shift, she checked his mobile phone and discovered a string of messages from Roberts, which prompted her to contact the police. The messages revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming behavior, with Roberts using the internet alias ‘Pixie’ to communicate with the boy.
Roberts sent a variety of sexually explicit texts, including one message that read, ‘Lying in bed in just a towel. Come remove it,’ along with photographs of herself. Other messages expressed affection and desire, such as ‘Miss you. Love you very much. I love everything about you,’ and ‘Want to cuddle and sleep with you.’
Her interactions with the boy extended beyond text messaging. Roberts also engaged in conversations via MSN Messenger, where she initiated further contact. The situation escalated when Roberts arranged to meet the boy in person on two separate occasions. During one of these meetings, she kissed and cuddled the teenager, actions that further compounded her criminal behavior.
The court proceedings took place at Portsmouth Crown Court, where Judge Graham White presided over the case. Roberts’ actions were deemed highly inappropriate and illegal, especially considering her position of trust and her role in supporting young children. Despite her denial of any sexual intent, the judge emphasized the seriousness of her grooming behavior.
Roberts was convicted on three counts of meeting a child following sexual grooming. The judge sentenced her to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, meaning she will not serve time immediately but will be under supervision for that period. Additionally, Roberts was banned indefinitely from working with children and will remain on the sex offenders’ register for ten years.
Judge White expressed his concerns about the case, stating, ‘This isn’t the case of Mrs Robinson and the graduate. It is the case of Mrs Roberts and the young boy. What concerns me is that she denies the offence of sexual intentions. Grooming an adolescent is a very serious crime, and caused extreme danger to the young person involved. I take the view that you sent him emotionally off the rails.’
Roberts, who resides on Keydell Avenue in Horndean, now faces the consequences of her actions, which have left a lasting impact on the young victim and the community at large.
