MAN JAILED FOR VIOLENT ASSAULT ON PARTNER AFTER RELATIONSHIP BREAKDOWN
A 60-year-old man residing on Endon Road in Norton Green has received a 40-month prison sentence after admitting to charges of intentional strangulation and assault causing actual bodily harm. The incident occurred when Kelvin Hilton attacked his former partner at her residence after she ended their seven-year relationship in September of the previous year.
Under the influence of heavy alcohol, Hilton entered the victim's bedroom at around 4am and became aggressive.
He strangled her with both hands, causing her to choke and gasp for breath, before punching her in the face.
This assault led to bleeding and an injury to her eye that required sealing with glue and possibly stitches.
The victim was left distressed, crying, and shocked, desperate to go to hospital but prevented by Hilton from leaving.
In court, prosecutor Hunter Gray highlighted Hilton's ongoing pattern of violence against women.
The court also heard from the victim, who stated, 'I'm currently off sick from work.
I am emotionally up and down.
I just burst into tears when I think about what happened.
I love my house and I don't want to move.
But I feel uncomfortable when I am there.
I have not had a full night's sleep since.' The seriousness of Hilton’s attack was underlined by a prosecutor emphasizing his violent history and the brutality of the incident.
The judge described the assault as 'vicious,' also ordering Hilton to stay away from his former partner for 10 years via a restraining order.
During sentencing, defense representative Anis Ali expressed that Hilton cares deeply for the victim, although he admitted that the attack was driven by panic and frustration.
The judge voiced strong condemnation of Hilton’s violence, citing a troubling pattern of offending, especially against women.
Hilton's guilty plea was treated as an acknowledgment of guilt, and it was noted that he was in a state of panic during the incident.
The court further highlighted that Hilton had been drinking heavily and had lost his job.
The sentence reflects the gravity of his actions and the court's rejection of violence in relationships.
