KELLY HYSON AND GARRY LORAM FROM DOVER SENTENCED OVER CRUELTY TO DOG ROSIE

In a distressing case that has shocked the community of Dover, Kelly Hyson and Garry Loram, both residents of the town, faced justice after their neglect led to the suffering and eventual euthanasia of their beloved mastiff, Rosie. The incident came to light in December 2014 when the RSPCA intervened after receiving a report about the dog's dire condition.

Kelly Hyson, born around 1981, and Garry Loram, born approximately in 1972, were living together at the time on London Road, Dover, with their pet. Hyson, who is a mother, has since moved on from her relationship with Loram and is now involved with a younger man. Despite their separation, both individuals faced charges related to the mistreatment of Rosie.

The RSPCA inspector, Caroline Doe, described the severity of Rosie's condition upon inspection. She stated, “In my years of doing this job I have not seen a dog in such a sorry state with her skin. Rosie had crusty lesions all over her body and only around 5% to 10% of fur coverage. The rest of her skin was incredibly sore and inflamed – even bleeding in places. There were open infected sores and multiple scabs. The poor dog suffered terribly for weeks and sadly had to be put to sleep on vet advice because the issues with her skin were so bad.”

Rosie’s suffering was attributed to severe mange, which had caused extensive fur loss, inflammation, and infection. Despite being taken to a veterinarian for treatment, the prescribed care was not followed, and when her condition failed to improve, her owners neglected to return her for further medical attention. This neglect resulted in her prolonged pain and suffering.

The court proceedings saw both Hyson and Loram plead guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering to Rosie by failing to provide adequate veterinary care. Their neglect ultimately led to her being euthanized on welfare grounds, a decision made by veterinary professionals to end her pain.

In sentencing, Kelly Hyson received a 12-month community order, which included 100 hours of unpaid work. Garry Loram was subjected to a nine-week curfew. Both individuals were fined £500 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £60. Notably, neither was banned from owning or caring for animals in the future, a point that drew criticism from animal welfare advocates.

This case highlights the ongoing issues of animal neglect and the importance of responsible pet ownership. The community of Dover remains reminded of the tragic consequences that can arise from neglecting the needs of vulnerable animals.
