ARAGH OFFENDER KEITH WILKINSON PLEADS GUILTY TO ANIMAL ABUSE IN 2020
Keith Leslie Wilkinson, born around 1976 and residing at 5 Mullansilla Road, Armagh BT61 9HN, was convicted in 2020 of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. The incident involved Wilkinson kicking a small dog so violently that the dog was propelled into the air and landed halfway down the garden.Wilkinson, described as a violent dog abuser from Armagh, Northern Ireland, pleaded guilty to the charge following an attack on a Shih-Tzu during an argument with his wife.
The prosecution explained that on November 26, 2019, police responded to Wilkinson's home and arrested him amid allegations that he had kicked the dog. During his initial police interview, Wilkinson denied the offence but later admitted to the act after viewing CCTV footage.
Defense lawyer Patrick Taggart explained that Wilkinson ‘helped his wife at her kennels at their home,’ emphasizing that caring for animals was an important part of his life. He added, ‘He had an argument with his partner and lashed out at the dog. He did not believe it himself until he was shown the CCTV.’
Deputy District Judge Kennedy commented on the incident, stating, ‘He would not have done it to a bigger dog. It would take a brave man to take on a larger dog.’
From the dock, Wilkinson expressed remorse, saying, ‘I am disgusted with myself.’ Mr. Taggart added, ‘Tempers had been raised. Once he watched the CCTV, he explained his feelings better than I could. Initially, he was not allowed to return to the family home, but that restriction was later varied, and he was also barred from having contact with animals.’
The judge acknowledged that this was likely a one-off offence, citing references from various community figures, including those involved in business and religious ministries. He remarked, ‘Something must have come over you and the rage caused you to kick this Shih Tzu. Had this been a bigger dog like a Rottweiler, you might have met your match.’
In sentencing, Wilkinson was fined £250 plus a £15 offender’s levy, payable within 20 weeks.
