MAN SENTENCED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WITH CHILD WITNESS PRESENT
A man named Keiron Hatton was found guilty of a series of brutal domestic assaults involving his partner.
He strangled his partner, kicked her down stairs, and subjected her to a campaign of coercive and controlling behavior, all in front of their child.
The incidents took place between January and June 2023 in Maesteg, including slapping her, pulling her back from falling down stairs, belittling her about her appearance, and mocking her past trauma.
During one assault, he punched her multiple times to the back of the head, kicked her down stairs, and left her with pain in her shoulders and stomach.
He also locked her out of the house for 20 minutes with hardly any clothing on.
The victim described her mental state, saying she is constantly anxious and has nightmares, and highlighted her increased fear of Hatton since the relationship ended.
Hatton initially claimed self-defense but pleaded guilty to coercive and controlling behavior a week before the trial.
His defense argued that he provides for his children and that imprisonment could harm them.
The judge described his treatment of the victim as "demeaning" and "nasty," and sentenced him to a four-month suspended prison sentence for 18 months.
He was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and 15 days of rehabilitation, pay £1,000 in prosecution costs, and a £100 victim surcharge.
The judge emphasized that the offence was aggravated by a child witnessing the attack, but considered the low risk of reoffending and the potential impact of immediate jail on the children, leading to a suspended sentence rather than immediate imprisonment.
