HULL TREE SURGEON AVOIDS JAIL AFTER ASSAULT ON MOTHER IN DRUNKEN RAMPAGE
Karl Robson, a Hull-based tree surgeon and known for prior violent offences, was described in court as a 'spoilt, pathetic brat' after he verbally and physically assaulted his mother during a dispute. The incident occurred early on May 2, when Robson, intoxicated, returned home around 6am.
Upon his mother questioning whether he had taken drugs, he responded with verbal insults, then punched the kitchen walls and windows, and threw a table at her.
According to statements heard at Hull Crown Court, Robson shouted: 'What did you f***ing say?
Who the f*** do you think you are?' His mother attempted to leave to defuse the situation, but he pursued her into the living room, calling her a 'f****** s**g.' He then lifted his fist threateningly, causing her to fear for her safety, and warned: 'Go on then, get me arrested.
See what I f****** do to you.' He threw a table but missed.
Prosecutor Harry Bradford explained that Robson shouted, swore, and made threats before leaving the house.
He was later detained after an area search but continued to threaten his mother from custody, claiming: 'wait till I get home, my mum is in trouble,' although he denies making such threats.
Robson’s criminal record includes a previous assault on his former girlfriend involving headbutts, strangulation, and kicks, for which he received a two-year suspended sentence in April.
He also has over thirty other convictions.
His attack on his ex was reportedly triggered by her messages to Eminem’s alter ego Slim Shady.
Court evidence revealed how he dragged her around, strangled her, and tried to bite her.
Despite this, the court allowed him to avoid jail again, citing remorse and his current detention period.
Robson criticized Hull Prison as a 'horrible place,' and his mother urged the court not to send him to jail, stating it was 'not the right place for Karl' and that he 'didn't mean to act badly.' She expressed her distress at reporting her son but emphasized that she could not tolerate his threats and abuse.
Bradford noted her feelings that Robson needed to learn a lesson and stressed that his behaviour was unacceptable.
Robson, who has been in custody for a month, apologized through a video link, attributing his actions to stress and alcohol, and expressed a desire to change his life.
He mentioned he was employed as a tree surgeon for Hull City Council.
The court heard he admitted to assaulting his mother and damaging property on May 2, and he was sentenced to a two-month suspended term, along with a rehabilitation course.
The new sentence will run alongside his previous suspended sentence, meaning any future offences could lead to a combined prison time of over two years.
Judge Kate Batty criticized Robson’s conduct, highlighting his bullying towards his mother and emphasizing that her support was the only reason he had a roof over his head.
She pointed out that he needed to take responsibility for his drinking problem and stop blaming others, urging him to grow up and cease his destructive behaviour.
