ISLAND MAN ADMITS TWICE ASSAULTING HIS WIFE
A 57-year-old man from the island of Yell has had his sentencing deferred until July 6 after admitting to two charges of seriously assaulting his wife at their home. The court heard that Karl Maguire, of Reafirth House, Mid Yell, pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife by throwing bottles at her and presenting a knife or similar instrument, threatening to kill her, on December 31, 2011.
He also admitted to assaulting her by grabbing her head and striking it against a wall sometime between January 1 and March 31, 2014.
The Procurator Fiscal Duncan Mackenzie stated that both incidents had recently come to light, with alcohol involved in the first case, which appeared to be a routine argument within the household.
Despite the serious nature of the charges, the couple remains together.
Maguire had previously completed an anger management course and was about to see a psychiatrist for further help.
His defense solicitor, Tommy Allan, mentioned that Maguire also faced health issues.
Sheriff Philip Mann emphasized the gravity of the charges and postponed the sentence pending social background reports.
