MAN SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR MURDER OF BABY

In a tragic case that has shocked the community of St Neots, Kane Mitchell, aged 31, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of an 11-week-old baby boy named Teddie Mitchell.

The incident occurred on November 1, 2019, at the family home in St Neots, where Mitchell, who was not the biological father of Teddie, inflicted fatal injuries during a moment of apparent temper and frustration.

Today, at Cambridge Crown Court, the court heard harrowing details of the injuries sustained by the infant, which ultimately led to his death in hospital ten days later.

The court also sentenced Lucci Smith, 30, the mother of Teddie, to a two-year community order for cruelty to a child.

Smith, who was present during the incident, was acquitted of causing or allowing death and serious injury but found guilty of neglect after a four-week trial.

Mitchell’s sentencing followed a detailed examination of the injuries he caused.

Mr Justice Knowles acknowledged that while Mitchell did not intend to kill Teddie, his actions demonstrated a clear intention to cause serious harm.

The court described how Mitchell, during a moment of rage, grabbed Teddie and squeezed him with such force that the infant’s ribs and clavicle fractured.

The injuries included 17 fractured ribs, a fractured clavicle, and severe skull fractures, brain, spinal, and eye injuries.

These injuries were caused by Mitchell violently striking Teddie’s head against a hard surface and squeezing him beyond the limits of his fragile bones.

The court heard that the assault took place while Smith was out, taking her other children to school.

Upon her return, she noticed that something was seriously wrong with her baby.

Throughout the morning and early afternoon, she expressed concern that Teddie was very ill, but it was not until around 3 pm that she called emergency services.

Despite her suspicions, she delayed calling 999 until after she had collected her other children from school, by which time Teddie had stopped breathing.

Emergency services arrived at the flat in Pattison Court, St Neots, and found the baby unresponsive.

Teddie was rushed to Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon, where doctors discovered the extent of his injuries, including a fractured skull and a significant brain bleed.

Medical staff and police investigations revealed that Teddie’s injuries were the result of Mitchell’s violent actions, which he carried out without Smith’s knowledge or foresight.

The court emphasized that her failure to seek earlier medical help could not have saved Teddie but might have alleviated some of his suffering.

Evidence showed that Smith loved her children and was capable of providing competent care, but her relationship with Mitchell appeared to influence her actions, leading to delays and a lack of intervention during critical moments.

Mitchell was described as an overbearing partner, and the court noted that his controlling behaviour diminished Smith’s ability to act in her children’s best interests.

Both Mitchell and Smith will be barred from working with children and vulnerable adults as part of their sentences.

The court’s verdict also included a recognition of the ongoing impact on the community and the tragic loss of a young life that could have been prevented.

In a separate but related case in January 2021, Mitchell was found guilty of the murder of Teddie after a four-week trial.

The jury heard that Mitchell inflicted multiple injuries, including rib fractures, a fractured collarbone, and a fractured skull, which caused Teddie’s death.

The injuries would have caused Teddie significant pain, leading to screaming and eventual unconsciousness.

The court was told that Mitchell believed he was Teddie’s biological father, a claim later disproved by DNA evidence.

Despite this, Mitchell could not explain how Teddie sustained his fatal injuries.

On the day of the incident, emergency services were called after Teddie was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest.

Despite efforts to save him, Teddie was placed on life support at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge but was eventually taken off life support after 11 days, passing away from his injuries.

Neighbours reported hearing arguments from the household regularly, indicating a troubled environment.

Both Mitchell and Smith were arrested at the hospital, and police investigations confirmed the severity of the injuries inflicted by Mitchell.

The court will sentence both individuals on February 5, 2021, in Cambridge.
