TEENAGERS JAILED FOR DEADLY FIREWORK ATTACK ON ELDERLY WOMAN
In east London’s Romford, two teenagers have been detained after murdering an elderly woman by inserting a lit firework through her letterbox. The victim, 88-year-old Josephine Smith, was likely asleep at the time her property was ignited in 2021.
Kai Cooper, aged 19, was sentenced to six and a half years after being convicted of manslaughter coupled with arson.
A 17-year-old male pleaded guilty to manslaughter, arson, and affray, and was sentenced to three years and eight months in detention.
Cooper, from Leatherhead, Surrey, also admitted to affray and has been sentenced to an additional two-year period on extended license following his prison term.
Judge Mark Dennis commented that the defendants appeared to have purchased fireworks with mischievous intent that evening, emphasizing that, “Your reckless and malicious behavior caused the death of a vulnerable and cherished person.” Court reports indicated that the boys had been troublesome since they were 14 years old.
Before the arson, they were involved in an assault on a woman in Ilford, which was documented via video recordings on Cooper’s cell phone.
The footage revealed Cooper encouraging the minor to attack the woman with a pole, and later to kick her while she was on the ground.
The next day, the pair visited a fireworks shop in Romford to acquire materials they planned to use to frighten others.
It was also disclosed that Cooper, who has autism spectrum disorder, and the minor, with previous convictions for battery and public order offenses, had violent tendencies.
