JURY TAKE 25 MINUTES TO FIND RAPIST GUILTY AFTER PARK ATTACK
A jury took only 25 minutes to convict a man of rape after he assaulted a woman in a park.Jwamer Saygul, aged 24 and residing in Ringway, Neston, was found guilty of violently raping the woman in a park located in Neston, Wirral, on October 3, 2022.
The incident occurred after he met the woman, who had recently arrived in the UK fleeing the conflict in Ukraine, on a bus from Chester City centre.
Saygul expressed interest in developing a relationship with her and arranged to meet in Neston.
While in the park, he attempted to initiate sexual activity.
When she refused, he grabbed her by the neck, pushed her to the ground, and assaulted her sexually.
The woman managed to escape and contacted a friend, who called the police.
Saygul was arrested shortly afterward.
During police interviews, Saygul claimed that the encounter was consensual and initiated by the victim.
He was formally charged with rape and entered a plea of not guilty at Chester Crown Court on November 3, 2022.
On April 5, the jury deliberated briefly and returned a guilty verdict after just 25 minutes.
The court sentenced Saygul to nine years in prison and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Sarah Egan, part of the CPS Mersey Cheshire’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) unit, highlighted that this was not Saygul’s first sexual offence.
She stated that the victim had come to the UK seeking refuge from war and violence in her homeland but was instead subjected to violent sexual assault.
Egan emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals and condemned Saygul’s actions, describing him as a predator with no remorse.
She noted that the case was concluded swiftly, with the jury reaching a decision in just 25 minutes, reflecting their confidence in the evidence.
The prosecution welcomed the prompt sentencing, which was delivered on the same day as the conviction, aligning with sentencing guidelines for such offences.
They expressed gratitude to the victim, witnesses, and the prosecution team for their role in achieving justice.
Egan concluded by reassuring the public that such crimes are taken very seriously, and offenders will be prosecuted fully.
The prosecutor also urged victims to come forward, reminding them of the support measures available, as those measures were successfully utilized in this case.
