JULIAN GLYNN, POLICE OFFICER FROM LEICESTERSHIRE, SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS FOR ABUSE IN NORTHAMPTON

In October 2004, Leicestershire police officer Julian Vaughan Glynn was sentenced to six years in prison at Northampton Crown Court for a series of sexually abusive acts towards young girls. Glynn, aged 47, who had served as a police officer for two decades, was found guilty of multiple charges related to planned abuse. The court described his actions as deliberately 'planned and prepared.' As a result of his conviction, Glynn will lose his police pension, his employment, and his family home. His wife and three sons are expected to be required to vacate their residence in Sapcote, near Burbage, due to disciplinary proceedings involving jailed officers.

Glynn, a former Royal Marine and Falklands veteran, sexually assaulted five girls at his home and another girl in his car over a span of six years from 1988 to 1994. He was convicted on 10 counts of indecency with a child and two additional charges of indecent assault. The jury delivered unanimous guilty verdicts in less than an hour.

In addition to his prison sentence, Glynn was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was permanently barred from working with children.

The court revealed that Glynn’s backyard was a popular play area for children during the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was there that he manipulated five girls, aged between seven and 14, into participating in inappropriate 'forfeit' games while his wife was at work. Several girls testified that Glynn would persuade them to take part in activities where they were blindfolded before he committed acts of indecency. A sixth girl, aged 15 at the time, also testified that Glynn indecently assaulted her while he was involved in training air cadets.

During his sentencing, trial judge Peter Ross stated, 'You perverted a perfectly proper children’s game to your own perverted use in order to obtain sexual gratification. These offences were planned by you, prepared for by you and, I am afraid, are all part of an obscene pattern. You saw children as sexual objects to be used and controlled for your own purposes.' He further explained, 'In some cases they were too frightened to make a complaint. They knew you were a police officer and that made it harder for them to speak out. You were a figure of authority.' The judge acknowledged the impact on Glynn’s family, saying, 'The sentence I impose on you will punish your family. I am truly sorry for that.'
