JAIL FOR MAN WHO TERRORISED EX-LOVER
A JILTED boyfriend has been imprisoned after harassing and attacking his ex-lover when he discovered she was seeing another man.Julian Burley, 30, was jailed for kicking and breaking the teeth of Emma Largant in her home and for verbally abusing her by phone and from the street when she was in her house.
Burley, who looks after his ailing mother at Elmore Avenue, Lee-on-Solent, denied two charges of harassment by using threatening and abusive language, but was convicted by Fareham magistrates at an earlier hearing.
The boat cleaner admitted common assault on Danny McGrath and assault causing actual bodily harm to Ms Largant and admitted using violence to damage and causing criminal damage to her property.
He was jailed for a total of 125 days.
In sentencing Burley yesterday, Fareham magistrates heard he was convicted of assaulting Ms Largant in 1988.
Magistrates were told by prosecutor Roger Venton that Burley twice told his former long-term girlfriend she would die or he would kill her.
The pair split up early last year, but briefly got together again after remaining in contact due to joint financial issues.
The court was told Ms Largant contacted him first, saying she wanted to see him again and he thought the relationship was on for the long-term again.
Burley arrived at the home they used to own together last summer and lost his temper when he saw there was another man.
He left and returned thinking she would be alone, but Mr McGrath was still there.
Burley punched Mr McGrath and kicked Ms Largant under the chin, knocked her over and damaged three teeth.
Her ankle was in plaster at the time, from an unrelated accident.
The pair recovered to force him out of the bedroom.
He then damaged the door by kicking and banging and damaged property elsewhere in the house, said Mr Venton.
Ms Largant and Mr McGrath called police who arrested and bailed him, but he still returned to terrorise her.
Four days later he scared her by shouting out she would die when walking past her home in the street and repeatedly making threats to kill her.
A week later Ms Largant received a threatening telephone call from Burley telling her she was going to die.
At the trial Ms Largant said she was frightened for her safety.
Bill Charlton, for Burley, said he genuinely thought his relationship with Ms Largant had resumed, with her initiating it.
He was shocked when he discovered she was seeing another man.
However, he now accepted the relationship was finally over.
