OFFENDER JAILED FOR BADGER BAITING AND ANIMAL CRUELTY IN COUNTY DOWN
Kilkeel, County Down: Joseph Rooney, born April 1969, has been convicted of activities related to animal cruelty, specifically badger baiting and cruelty to a dog.
Rooney was found guilty of attempting to damage or destroy the shelter of a wild animal in Aughnacloy, County Tyrone, in December 2019, and also of failing to take reasonable steps to meet the needs of an animal.
Following his conviction, he lodged an unsuccessful appeal in June 2025.
Costs awarded to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) for caring for a seized dog were increased to £4,000, and the dog has since been rehomed.
Police reports indicate that in December 2019, Rooney was involved in badger baiting activities, attempting to disrupt a wild badger's habitat using a terrier-type dog, which was seized by officers.
Rooney was sentenced to a one-month custodial sentence suspended for 18 months, a 12-month conditional discharge for resisting arrest, a fine of £500, and ordered to pay costs.
The case involved cooperation with multiple agencies, including the local police, wildlife department, and veterinary services, emphasizing that badger baiting and animal cruelty are illegal and condemned activities.
