ABUSER JAILED AFTER LYING THAT PARTNER HAD CAUSED INJURIES TO HERSELF
A man from Plymouth was convicted of regularly assaulting his partner and subsequently claiming she had sustained injuries either at her workplace or by her own doing.Joseph Powney, aged 35, residing on Beaumont Road in Plymouth, received a three-year imprisonment sentence at Plymouth Crown Court on Tuesday, June 2.
Additionally, a restraining order lasting seven years was imposed to ensure the victim's protection.
Powney pleaded guilty on the first day of his scheduled trial to controlling and coercive behaviour within an intimate relationship.
During the sentencing, court proceedings revealed that police responded to the victim’s residence in September 2024, where they discovered her outside with injuries, and Powney had already left the scene.
The victim reported that she had been assaulted and strangled by Powney, who later surrendered himself to authorities.
Over approximately ten months, she endured multiple assaults and strangulation incidents inflicted by Powney, resulting in various physical injuries and ongoing psychological trauma.
In interviews with law enforcement, Powney consistently denied abusing his partner throughout their relationship, asserting instead that the injuries she sustained either occurred at her workplace or were self-inflicted.
