UWE RESEARCH SCIENTIST FOUND WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
A scientist who shared images depicting child abuse has received a court sentence.
Joseph Payne, 27 years old, holds a PhD in research related to bacterial diseases and is employed at the University of the West of England (UWE).
In his off-hours, Payne engaged in online conversations with individuals sharing similar interests, discussing the topic of having sexual contact with minors.
Authorities investigating a suspected sex offender uncovered troubling exchanges between Payne and a person named Burns via WhatsApp, which included discussions on inappropriate subjects.
Additionally, Payne was found to have forwarded a photograph of a boy aged between 12 and 15, showing him naked from the waist down, leading to his identification and arrest.
He pleaded guilty to six charges three for distributing indecent images of children and three for creating them and the crimes took place from January 2017 through July 2018.
At Bristol Crown Court on July 3, 2019, Judge Peter Blair QC sentenced Payne to a three-year community order, requiring 140 hours of unpaid work.
He was also ordered to pay £425 in court costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
Furthermore, Payne must register as a sex offender for five years and is subject to a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order restricting his internet activities without oversight.
