JOSEPH NOLAN FROM WALLASEY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRLS IN NEW BRIGHTON
In a case that has shocked the local community of Wallasey and the surrounding areas, Joseph Nolan, a 57-year-old resident of Poulton Road in Wallasey, was found guilty of sexually assaulting two teenage girls in New Brighton.The incident took place on the evening of August 13 last year, when Nolan approached the two young girls who were sitting on a bench along Marine Promenade, a popular seaside location known for its scenic views and bustling crowds.
During a two-day trial at Liverpool Crown Court, the prosecution presented evidence that Nolan had engaged in inappropriate behavior towards the teenagers.
Miss Mary Compton-Rickett, the prosecutor, detailed how Nolan, after telling a crude joke, proceeded to make unwanted physical contact with both girls.
Specifically, Nolan touched the breast of each girl over their clothing, an act that caused significant distress and embarrassment to the victims.
The court heard that Nolan then cycled away from the scene, leaving the girls shaken and humiliated.
Judge Denis Clark presided over the case and delivered a stern sentence, condemning Nolan's actions as targeted and predatory.
The judge stated, "You targeted them at 10 o'clock at night.
You frightened and disturbed them and preached your views to them.
It will take them many years to get over this.
They were very embarrassed and humiliated by this." Joseph Nolan, who chose to represent himself during the trial, denied the charges of touching the second girl’s breast, claiming that he had pushed her away on her arm and that he believed the first girl was consenting to his actions.
However, he admitted to touching the 16-year-old girl’s breast, believing she was willing.
As part of his sentence, Nolan was sentenced to 10 months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offenders Act for a period of 10 years, a measure intended to monitor his activities and prevent further offenses.
The case has left a lasting impact on the victims and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding young people from predatory behavior in public spaces.
